While all mosques & Muslim leaders realize that we need to offer support to converts & other marginalized people in our community, not all of them are equipped to do so effectively.

OUR STORY

Madina Institute has been around for decades, but it wasn't until 2018 that we were finally able to launch a convert support group. Square 1 began as the "New Muslim Circle" at the Madina Institute masjid in Duluth, GA: just a small group of volunteers got together to formulate a plan to offer basic classes & support for Muslim CONVERTS in the local community.

It soon became clear that we also needed to offer similar support to another segment of the community that is often overlooked: the Muslims who want to REDEDICATE themselves to the Deen of Islam & need a place to start. We have many Muslims who grew up without truly understanding or practicing the religion, and others who have fallen off-track & sincerely want to make a change for the better, who want to make tawba. We want to make it easier to get back on the right track.

What makes Madina UNIQUE? Unlike other mosques, it's not just a place of prayer. Madina is also a world-class Islamic seminary & a diverse community hub. People come, literally, from all over the world just to visit Madina in Atlanta, especially in Ramadan! It's an immense blessing from Allah. When you come here, you really feel at home. What we teach

Balanced

We teach an Islamic understanding that emphasizes inward development, not just outward practices; one that is simple & straight-forward; and which combines sensitivity to our cultural & social reality with the ideals, methods & tools that Islam gives us.

We also hold true to core Islamic principles firmly rooted in the Quran Sunnah, whether they be legal, spiritual or practical. In the peripheral matters where there is valid difference of scholarly opinion, we promote love, tolerance & respect for all.

What we teach & offer is based on the authentic teachings of the God's Book (The Quran) & Sunnah, first & foremost, and also encourages people to be absolutely authentic & true to themselves in a way that brings out your best.

We firmly believe that what makes a person excel in their Deen is when they stay connected to the community, and when they take initiative & ownership in their knowledge & practice of Islam, with sincerity.

Sister Alexandra Contos

Square 1 Team Leader

Sister Alexandra is originally from Colorado, and considers herself a "seasoned" American Muslim convert. Her family heritage is both Puerto Rican & Greek, and she was raised in the Christian faith. She embraced Islam in 2000 during her first year of college, and since then she's been a keen seeker in the traditional sciences of Islam, and is passionate about community work - supporting converts & newly practicing Muslims is a huge part of that.

She is the team lead for Square 1 convert support, and is a licensed Quran Coach/Tajwid instructor, currently studying under Al-Qari Shaykh Abdullah Deeb & Shaykh Abdulkarim Sekta of Itqaan Institute. She is a student of Hanafi Fiqh and like all our volunteers, a student of Shaykh Ninowy and the teachers of Madina!
